## Frequently asked questions

### How do I share files online?

Pick one of two modes. Direct sends the file straight from your device to the other person's browser with no upload and no size limit, but both of you need the page open at the same time. Upload link stores the file and gives you a URL you can send now and they can open later, for files up to 50MB. Neither needs an account.

### Does my file get uploaded to your server?

In Direct mode, no. The file travels browser to browser over an encrypted peer-to-peer connection, and our server only helps the two devices find each other — it never receives the file. In Upload link mode it does: the file is stored in cloud storage so the link keeps working after you close the page.

### How long are shared files available?

Files uploaded with a share link are deleted after 7 days. Direct transfers are not stored anywhere at all, so there is nothing to expire. Files uploaded before expiry was introduced are unaffected and remain available.

### What is the maximum file size?

Direct mode has no limit imposed by us — people send multi-gigabyte video this way. Upload link mode is capped at 50MB. The practical ceiling in Direct mode depends on the receiving browser: Chrome and Edge write straight to disk and can take anything, while Firefox and Safari have to hold the transfer in memory and top out around 1.5GB.

### Does it work between different countries, or only on the same Wi-Fi?

Anywhere. Sharing a code or link connects two devices on opposite sides of the world just as well as two in the same room. Being on the same Wi-Fi only changes the speed — a local transfer runs at network speed, while a long-distance one is limited by the sender's upload bandwidth, so a very large file across continents can take hours.

### Can I send a folder, or just text?

Both. You can send whole folders with their structure intact, several files at once, or just a piece of text — a link, a snippet, a password — which is often the quickest way to get something from your phone onto your laptop.

### Why did my direct transfer fail to connect?

Some networks — corporate Wi-Fi and a few mobile carriers in particular — block the direct connection between two browsers. When that happens the tool says so and offers to switch you to Upload link mode instead, with your file already selected.

### Is the direct transfer encrypted?

Yes. WebRTC connections are encrypted end to end with DTLS by default, and because the bytes never pass through our servers there is no copy for us or anyone else to read. Pairing codes are single-use and expire after 10 minutes.
